Canadian Gastro-Intestinal Epidemiology Consortium (CanGIEC)

The Canadian Gastro-Intestinal Epidemiology Consortium (CanGIEC) is a pan-Canadian network of clinicians, researchers and methodologists that work together to provide the evidence required to improve outcomes and health care services for Canadians with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using population-level data.

IBD is a chronic life-long condition that causes inflammation and ulceration of the gut. Almost 250,000 Canadians live with IBD and Canada has amongst the highest rates of IBD in the world with the greatest increased number of new diagnoses in children <5 years and the elderly representing the fasting growing group of people living with the disease. CanGIEC involves 7 provinces with expertise in clinical care for IBD and experienced in the use of administrative data, epidemiology, and health services research.

As a team we aim to answer important IBD questions to assess the impact of the disease, determine costs of care and improve the quality of care provided to IBD patients in Canada. In addition we will also improve the methods used to conduct research using routinely-collected health data.
